Lake Solai: An underrated lake in Kenya that is stunning!

Do you need a place where the world just… stops?

We found it. Tucked away in the Great Rift Valley is a saltwater gem called Lake Solai. It’s quiet, it’s stunning, and honestly? It’s one of Kenya’s best-kept secrets.

Here’s why you need to add this underrated spot to your bucket list.

A Beauty Born from Resilience

Lake Solai hasn’t always been in the spotlight. For many, the name is tied to the 2018 Patel Dam tragedy. But like nature always does, the area has found its way back to peace.

The lake itself is doing something incredible. Since the ’80s, the water level has risen by over 8 meters—that’s like a two-storey building! It’s growing into this massive, beautiful ecological haven right before our eyes.

The Spontaneous Road Trip

We didn’t overthink this one. Four of us, some takeout lunch, and a full tank of gas.

The drive from Nakuru is half the fun. We took the scenic route through Milimani, and as the valley opened up, we had to slow down. You can’t rush views like these. The wind in your face and the Rift Valley stretching out—it’s the ultimate therapy.

Sunset & Stillness

We pulled up just as the sun started its final act.

If you’re looking for a place to meditate, read a book, or just sit in silence, this is it. The water turned these magical shades of pink and brown. We just sat on the shore and breathed. No noise, no hustle—just the lake’s heartbeat.

Gliding on the Water

You can’t visit without taking a boat ride.

Being out on the water gives you a whole different perspective of the surrounding hills. It’s calm, it’s tranquil, and if you’re into bird watching, it’s basically paradise. We spotted:

  • Elegant storks
  • Flamingos adding pops of color
  • A whole mix of biodiversity that’s finally getting the attention it deserves.

The Verdict

The Nakuru County government is starting to develop this area—think fishing, hiking, and cultural centers—but for now, it still feels like a secret.

Whether you’re coming with family or just need a solo escape, Lake Solai is the place to chill. Pack a meal, grab your squad, and get there before everyone else finds out about it.
