Is this the most underrated camping spot in Kenya? (Our Camp Ndunda experience)

Camp Ndunda Thumbnail

We just got back from Camp Ndunda in Embu, and honestly, it might be the most underrated camping spot in the country. If you’re looking for a place where you can actually hear yourself think (and maybe scream a little during a canopy walk), this is it.

Here’s the lowdown on our Embu escape.

The Scenic Route

We kicked things off with a prayer at a Shell station in Nakuru. To make the drive worth it, we took the “canopy route“—the road that cuts through Subukia and Nyahururu.

Driving through those thick tree tunnels is half the fun. We even caught that crisp Highland air at Ndundori, which is basically a natural reset button for your lungs.

Bonfires & Fun

By the time we hit Embu, it was dark. Camp Ndunda is tucked away in the Njukiri Forest, and the registration and tent-pitching felt like stepping into another world.

That night was all about:

  • A massive bonfire that lit up the forest.
  • A surprise birthday celebration for one of our crew members.
  • Falling asleep to the sound of crickets and the distant roar of the Rupingazi River.

Thrills

Morning came with dew on the grass and a serious list of activities.

  • The Canopy Walk: You’re walking 30 meters above the ground on swaying boards. Pro tip: keep your legs apart for stability if your knees start shaking!
  • The Wild Swing: A rope swing anchored high over the rushing river. Our ladies absolutely killed it, representing for the crew while some of us (me included) watched safely from the ground.
  • The Wild Slide: A literal launch into the stream beside the falls. Not for the faint of heart.

Nature’s Therapy

The real star of the show is the Camp Ndunda Falls. It’s a twin waterfall that’s 12 meters of raw, thundering power. Sitting by the spray and just breathing it in is pure therapy.

The Verdict

It’s a long haul, about 500km round trip from Nakuru, but every kilometer is worth it. Whether you’re there for the Zumba on the grounds or the quiet of the nature trails, Camp Ndunda gives you exactly what the city takes away.
