Ndumo Festivals Nanyuki x Mt. Ololokwe Samburu Roadtrip

We just got back from a journey that took us from the heart of Kikuyu culture to the sacred, silent peaks of Samburu. It was part festival, part road trip, and entirely soul-cleansing.

Here’s the story of our trip to the Ndumo Festival and Mount Ololokwe.

The Road to Nanyuki

We rolled out of Nakuru just after 8:00 AM. There’s a specific kind of magic in that morning air when the whole crew is finally together.

We made the mandatory stop at the equator crossing in Subukia to stretch our legs and soak in the Rift Valley views. Honestly, those viewpoints never get old—they demand a moment of silence just to take in the scale of it all.

Ndumo Festival: A Cultural Awakening

Our first major destination was Bantu Mountain Lodge for the Ndumo Festival

The moment we stepped in, the sound of Kikuyu tunes filled the air. This wasn’t just a party; it was a celebration of identity. We saw:

  • Traditional Crafts: Stunning beadwork and handwoven clothes.
  • The Taste of Tradition: We tried Muratina, a local Kikuyu wine. It’s earthy, alive, and tastes like home.
  • Living History: Learning about the origin story of Gikuyu and Mumbi while standing near the slopes of Mount Kenya felt incredibly powerful.

The Samburu Stretch

After the festival, we refueled with some juicy Nyama Choma in Nanyuki town. Then, we pushed toward Isiolo.

Fair warning for anyone heading this way: the security checkpoints are no joke. You’ll need to show your original physical or digital ID to pass through. It’s serious, but it’s all about safety in the northern region.

Mount Ololokwe: The Sacred Rock

As we cleared the last checkpoint, Mount Ololokwe finally loomed into view.

This is arguably the most Instagrammable mountain in Kenya, but photos don’t do it justice. It’s a massive, looming rock that holds deep cultural significance for the Samburu people.

Standing there at sunset with the rugged ridges and expansive plains stretching out around us was pure therapy. We opened the sunroof, let the breeze in, and just… existed.

The Verdict

Kenya is a beautiful country, but you have to actually walk it to see it. Whether it’s the rhythm of a cultural dance or the silence of a Samburu peak, these roads have stories to tell.

If you’re ready to see more than just the usual tourist spots, grab your ID, fuel up, and head North.
